Golden Visa

The “Golden Visa” is an investment programme that grants a valid residence permit in Portugal to foreign citizens from non-EU countries, allowing them to move freely within the Schengen zone.

Suitable for Non-EU citizens looking to become involved in investment activities for at least 5 years, we support the set-up, management, and assistance of Golden Visa applications for eligible individuals and their families.

The benefits of the Golden Visa programme are clear, however, the stringent requirements that must be met for eligibility are less so. After the initial 5-year period is complete, we can also help you and your family gain Portuguese citizenship.

Who can benefit?

Non-EU citizens involved in an investment activity for at least 5 years and that fulfill the necessary requirements.

All third states citizens involved in an investment activity in Portugal, including shareholders of companies already set-up in Portugal or in another member state of the EU with a stable presence in Portugal and compliant with tax obligations.

GOLDEN VISA Programme Requirements

To apply to for the Golden Visa Programme citizens should be involved in an investment activity, either individually or through a company conducting, at least, one of the following operations in the Portuguese territory for a minimum of 5 years.

• Capital transfer with a value equal to or above €1 million.
• Creation of at least 10 jobs.
• Acquisition of a real estate with a value equal to or above € 500.000,00
Acquisition and rehabilitation work of a real estate constructed at least 30 years ago or located in an urban rehabilitation area, for a minimum global amount of € 350.000,00, which might also be made in c-ownership or by means of a single member limited company of which he/she is the proprietor, with headquarters in Portugal or in an EU member state.
Capital transfer with a value equal to or above € 350.000,00 for investing in research activities conducted by public or private scientific research institutions involved in the national scientific or technology sectors.
• Capital transfer in an amount equal to or above € 250.000,00, to be applied in the support or investment in artistic production, the defense and restoration of the national cultural patrimony, through central and local administration, public institutes, entities within the business public sector, public foundations, private foundations with public utility, intermunicipal entities, entities that integrate the local business sector, municipal associative entities and cultural public associations which purpose is to promote and achieve artistic production, defence and restoration or maintenance of the national heritage.
Capital transfer in an amount equal to or above € 500.000,00, for investment in the acquisition of participation units in venture capital funds or investment funds specialized in the capitalization of small or medium enterprises with a viable capitalization plan.

(The aforementioned investment activities must be maintained for a minimum of 5 years from the date residence permit is granted)

Residence Permit of Family Members

• The family member of the citizen with a residence permit is issued a renewable residence permit, valid for two years (except if the family member is the spouse married for over 5 years, in which case an autonomous residence permit is issued).
• Two years after the issue of the first residence permit, and under the assumption that family ties remain, family members are entitled to an autonomous residence permanent.

Portuguese Citizenship

Citizens may apply for Portuguese citizenship after 5 years of being a legal resident in Portugal.

Legal requirements for Family Reunification

• Accommodation in Portugal.
• Means of subsistence.

Applying for Family Reunification

Family reunification consists of the right of the citizen with a residence permit in obtaining the entry and residence of family members. This encompasses members of the family that have legally entered Portugal with whom the citizen with residence permit had lived in another country, that depend on the citizen, or that cohabit with him.

Family members currently recognized include: 

• Spouses.
• Minors adopted even when not married, by the applicant or spouse, by the effect of relevant authority in the country of origin.
• Adult children dependent on the couple or one of the spouses that are unmarried and are studying in an education establishment.
• Ascendants (direct first degree) of the citizen with the resident permit or of the spouse and that are dependent on the citizen.
• Minor siblings who are in the custody of the citizen with a resident permit as decided by the relevant authority of the country of origin.
• Non-marital partners provided that the relationship is recognized under law.
• Unmarried minor children or incapacitated children, including adopted children, of the non-marital partner provided they are legally entrusted the citizen.

Obtaining the Permanent Residence Visa

• Hold a temporary residence permit for at least 5 years.
• Not convicted within Portugal with the penalty or penalties that individually or cumulatively exceed 1 year in prison.
• Have accommodation in Portugal
• Demonstrably have knowledge of the basic Portuguese language.

(The application to obtain the permanent residence can be extended to minors in the charge of the applicant. Applicants may request family reunification)

Temporal Requirements

• The temporary residence permit is valid for a period of 1 year from the date of issue and may be renewed for successive periods of 2 years as long as the legal requirements remain.
• For the purposes of renewal, the applicant may have to demonstrate that they have remained in Portugal for at least 7 consecutive or interrupted days in the first year and 14 consecutive or interrupted days in each subsequent period of two years.
• After 5 years, it is possible to obtain permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship.

Legal Requirements

• Being of legal age – 18 years old.
• Having sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language.
• Having not been convicted of any crime punishable with deprivation of liberty equal to or exceeding 3 years, according to Portuguese law.
